Preparing

Just over six weeks ago the thought of the first day of autumn term was of little concern to me. It was so far away, and there was a whole summer of late bedtimes, lazy mornings and fun filled days to be had. This last week, however, has seen the need for us to ready ourselves for the inevitable return to work and school. Lily has endured the back to school haircut, new shoes have been bought, name labels have been stitched and the P.E. bag is hung on the door ready for the morning. We're as ready as we can be.

Nevertheless, the whole idea of rushed mornings and the approaching darker evenings has got me rather melancholy this year. Naturally, I find myself missing the long, sunny, carefree days of summer, but by this time of the year I usually find I am in need of a bit more structure to my days as the seasons begin to change. Recently I have also begun to really love autumn, so I don't know why I'm feeling this way.  I'm sure I will feel fine once I get back in the swing of things and Lily settles into her second year at school. That's possibly part of my unease. It seems quite a big leap from Reception class into Year 1, as if all of a sudden they are expected to be much more grown up.

At least the changing weather has seen me spending more time in the kitchen. It has felt good to be getting my bake-on again and the slow cooker has seen it's first use since the beginning of the year. With my days getting busier, I think I'll be using it much more often from now on.

I've also been doing some work outside. I've cut back some of the hedges and the small tree at the end of the garden. I still need to turn over the raised bed when it's finally cleared, the flower bed next to it and then tidy up the pots and large planter.  It's all been a bit neglected recently and I want to make sure it's tidied up and  I'm on top of things before the cold weather arrives. We're still eating our way through our home grown beans and beetroot. The tomatoes are finally ripening and they will get used up in soups and sauces.

Our days have been quite overcast, but  mostly warm and dry, so we've still found chance to get out in the fresh air. Following a walk in some nearby woods, we discovered a bird hide tucked away, which I think we will be paying a visit to again in the future, and at the weekend we spent a lovely afternoon by Grasmere. We were surprised at how quiet it was, for once, and we were so relaxed as we walked along we hadn't noticed how quickly the hours had passed. We didn't return to the village until almost half past five, however, we were still just in time to buy some Grasmere gingerbread which, having been freshly baked, was still slightly warm from the oven. Delicious!

  1. I like the changing seasons but I guess any change requires a shift in the way our days go. Hopefully lily will settle back in to the routine and you’ll feel better too x

    1. I suspect the seasons changing and a general shift as to how my days are is also another part of my unease at the moment. I am, however, looking forward to getting out for a run tomorrow. It will be my first in around seven weeks! X

    3. Thank you CT, it went surprisingly well. I just did a gentle 4 miles, but felt great considering I've been out of action for a while. X

  2. Enjoy these last days of summer. I also feel a melancholy at this time of year, but the terrible heat we have been having has me looking forward to cooler times.

  3. I’m sure all will be well in Y1 and I’m know there will be lots to tell you tomorrow evening. I love Grasmere and remember a wonderful walk there a good few years ago with my family. I’m feeling a little unsettled too. Usually the case until autumn routines settle in. Good luck for tomorrow. B x

    1. I do hope so Barbara, she seemed a little nervous this morning. Looking through the comments it would seem a few of us feel unsettled at the change of the seasons. It's reassuring to know it's not just me. X

  5. I'm feeling a little sad that the summer holidays are over already. They seem to have gone especially fast this year. But I'm also looking forward to some routine re-appearing, a little bit of time alone and the new season. Our late nights and lie-ins will be sorely missed though.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your posts over summer. They've shown what looks to have been a wonderful time for you and your family with lots of happy memories being made.

Lily's PE bag has made me all nostalgic for when mine were little. The ballet dancer is beautiful, did you sew it? These days Thomas heads off with his kit in a plastic sports shop bag slung over his shoulder. I bet Lily was super excited to discover a bird hide in the woods and the plum cake looks delicious, I could just eat a piece with a big serving of custard.

I hope Lily enjoys her first days back at school. I'm with you regarding Y1. It's a big change from reception. They're expected to sit still and listen and there's a lot more structure in class but I'm sure she will love it just as much as her first year at school. xx

    1. It has gone by so fast Suzanne but it sounds like you've enjoyed some lovely times at the caravan. I'm usually ready to get back into a routine by now but for some reason I've felt different this year, although I only just realised yesterday that it's the first year in forever that I haven't worked at all during the Summer. We've had a great time though.
The P.E. bag is lovely isn't it. My good friend gave it to Lily when she started school. I was worried it was too pretty and might get ruined but it's doing great and washes brilliantly. I wonder how long she will use it before it gets passed over for something less cute? X

  6. The summer has flown by. It's understandable to feel down when the carefree days of the summer holidays are coming to an end, I used to feel that way too. You'll soon be back in the swing of things once the new school year is underway.

  8. I am sure when you get back into the school routine you will be back to your normal self too - change is always a bit hard even when you know it is about to happen. I am a bit disappointed to find everywhere I look the mention of Christmas it feels like we miss autumn out now!
Beautiful photos that capture the moment and the changes x

    1. I'll be fine once I'm back into some sort of pattern to my days Vivien but I definitely don't want to be thinking about Christmas just yet, although I have a feeling the Hallowe'en decorations will be out in the supermarket during the coming week.

    1. It does seem like a big leap doesn't it. In reception class the children are still cosseted to a certain extent. Although, I'm sure she'll be OK and I'm just worrying over nothing. X

  12. Daisy, one of my Grandaughters goes into year 1 this week too and her Mum who is a teacher has the same concerns. It is quite natural to be concerned and in a few weeks time you will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. Save me some of the gingerbread it sounds delicious. Thankyou for your well wishes to Gerard, he is feeling so much better and we are hopeful that he will be hoe soon.

  13. ooh, that cake looks good.
I think it's always us who worry more than the children. We worry about so much, they just go in, make friends easily, and get on with it. But I know what you mean, the relaxed pace of reception to Y1 is a huge change.
Sorry you are a little down at the prospect of colder days and early dark nights. xx

    1. Thank you Sadie. The cake tasted good too! I ate the last piece last night.
I think because we've enjoyed such a wonderful Summer that I've just been sad that it's coming to an end. I do love Autumn now, the cooler weather and dark nights. I think it's this in-between time I struggle with, as the seasons start to change, and because it coincides with the start of the school year it seems to signify so much more. My concerns about Lily starting Y1 have been unecessary however, she had a great first day yesterday :) X

  14. It is a huge step from reception to year 1 isn't it. I'm sure Lily will be absolutely fine but that doesn't stop you from worrying. This time next year I will be beside myself with worry as Ruby will be moving from a tiny village school to a much bigger school in town. I'm hoping the year goes really, really slowly.

What is that that you have baked? It looks absolutely delicious.
    Hugs-x-

    1. I think it is Sheila. Perhaps more of a leap than from pre-school to Reception, although we seem to forget that children seem much more accepting of change, but then it's our job to worry. Lily attends a village school with a huge outdoor space which is really lovely.
The cake is a plum and cinnamon cake. It's light, moist and delicious. I meant to serve it with custard but just couldn't wait to eat it :) X

  15. (((HUGS))). I think the change in the season from summer and all that implies (long, warm days, being off school, time to play, etc.) to fall (cooler, shorter days, going back to school, more routine and structure) is the hardest. Winter has one looking forward to the holidays and the promise of spring, and the change from spring to summer is the best, I think. And yes, it signals a little girl is growing up.

I am not quite sure what Reception is...is it like Kindergarten, over here? Here, some schools have pre-kindergarten (3-4 year olds), then, kindergarten when they are 5 and grade 1 when they are 6. My daughter was still 5 when she went to grade 1, because she basically skipped kindergarten; as a result, she was always the youngest in her class!

    1. I don't mind the colder weather and dark nights Bless, I think it's this in-between time I struggle with, that and my little girl is growing up too fast. She enjoyed a great first day back yesterday though, so thankfully my concerns were unnecessary.
Reception class here is the equivalent of Kindergarten. Like your daughter, I was always the youngest in my class. X

  16. Hi Jules I shall miss the summer. Today when I went out it was all a mad rush parents buying clothes and stationery ready for the new term. Well done on your growing efforts, I find homegrown tomatoes are much more sweeter and flavoursome. The hide must have been fun for Lily, one day I would love to have a little hide in the garden or a summer house where I could tuck myself away in all weathers and sit and bird watch. Your cake looks so good, your baking always does. xx

  17. Your cake looks so delicious! My daughter is in third grade and it's a big transition from second grade. They are expected to be much more independent this year. Your daughter's gym bag is adorable. I hope she has a great school year. Autumn seems so far away here, as it still feels like mid July. Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year and I hope it arrives very soon!

  18. I was always sad when the holidays came to an end and my little ones had to go back to school. I'm still clinging on to summer here, I hate the seasons changing, the cooler weather and the darker evenings. You seem to have done so much with Lily over the summer, had lots of outdoor time and trips here and there, so many lovely things to look back on.

  19. Warm Grasmere gingerbread is the best! I won't queue for many things but for that I'll wait every time.

I understand your melancholy but I get it the other way around, autumn slows everything down for me and we develop a lovely routine - flasks of soup and football matches that start in the light and end in the darkness. I guess that's one of the joys of childfreeness.

    1. The great thing was, we didn't have to wait for the gingerbread this time. I think I must have been the last customer of the day. And I only just noticed that it says on the wrapping to warm it in the oven for a few minutes anyway in order to reinvigorate the spices. Clearly I've missed this previously in my hurry to eat it :)
I do like Autumn, it's the approaching end of Summer I'm a bit sad about. Although I know I can't have one without the other. X

  20. I found not being able to walk Evie to her classroom as the biggest thing...

...they are also expected to be more independent which is a good thing, but when you consider there is a year between the oldest and youngest kids it seems a bit unfair on the youngest.

Im sure Lily will love year 1 :)

    1. They still seem so young to be taking seemingly big steps in their lives. Lily has been going to class by herself since Easter so that hasn't changed this term. The school has a good system which works well and eases them in gently. Shame it doesn't stop me worrying though. 😃

  21. As parent's it is only natural that we worry about our children, but I'm sure Lily will be absolutely fine as she progresses from Reception to Year One.

  22. I love Autumn but find myself also mourning the end of summer. The older I get the more conscious I become of the passing seasons which translate into passing years. I can become very melancholy too. Grasmere is certainly a place to lift the spirits and the gingerbread is always a 'must-have' purchase! I've never been lucky enough to find it still warm though. I hope Lily enjoys Year 1. My youngest granddaughter has just moved into year 3 and seems terribly grown up all of a sudden.

The gingerbread is so delicious and I've never eaten it warm before either, although having read the wrapper (for once), apparently you are supposed to put it in the oven for a few minutes before it's eaten. I hope your granddaughter is enjoying her new school year. X
