Sea Air


With every passing day, life is slowly returning to a steady rhythm once more and I can feel my shoulders beginning to lighten from the recent stress and worry which have been weighing me down these last few months.  With the uncertainty and apprehension almost behind us now, it is with huge relief I can now see myself looking forward and making plans for the months ahead once again.

In recognition of what feels like new beginnings, at the weekend I thought it a good opportunity to have a ceremonial blowing away of the cobwebs with a walk along the shore. There is nothing quite like a good dose of sea air to awaken the senses and make me feel alive, especially since the previous day had been so wet and windy we didn't even leave the house.

The day brought with it some lovely bright sunshine but the wind was still blustering and, of course, along the coast it is so much stronger than inland, that there were moments when it felt more than a little arduous to be walking in it. But, most importantly, it felt so good. Exhausting but good. While billowy white clouds raced across the sky we trundled across the sand, breathing in the fresh salty air. We continued to walk for a while, stopping briefly to enjoy a light picnic lunch (holding onto it very tightly!) and a play on the swings, before retracing our steps once more.  By this time our pace had quickened as, although the wind was now predominantly against us, it appeared to be sending some very dark rain clouds our way.


As the wind whipped around us, it felt bitterly cold and, although we were wrapped up well, since I had forgotten to take along my mittens,  my hands had spent much of the time tucked away in my pockets. Returning home I soon had them warm once more, wrapping them around a steaming hot mug of tea, the day's exertion lending itself to me feeling tired all of a sudden, yet with a clear head and renewed spirit.

    2. I've lived near the sea most of my life and have never heard nor thought of 'vitamin sea' before. It's brilliant. I shall be using that from now on. Thank you Justjill.

  2. We've had some really blustery weather just lately, and as you say, it's even worse at the coast. It's been lovely this week though, we've been out without coats, but the temperature has definitely dropped again today.

  5. Gosh the picture of your beach is so similar to the one here at the cottage. It feels good to walk along at this time of year - as you say it blows away all those cobwebs and leaves you more clear headed.
    Good to read everything is sorting itself out now - I always think that some good comes out of bad. xx

  10. What a beautiful post, Jules. I'm glad that you had pockets to keep your hands warm. It really makes a difference in comfort to be wrapped up well and to have a hot cup of tea or coffee.

  11. Arh glad you're picking up again Jules and feeling hopeful. I seem to have lost touch with blogland again. I've finished the blanket I was crocheting for my MIL and after loading some photos, I've yet to blog about them. I've taken both fb and instagram off my phone and feel like I'm emerging from a fog of being unproductive. It's very liberating.
    Living nearer to the eastcoast in Lincolnshire we went for a windy walk recently too before visiting MIL in Hampshire. We delivered her blanket. Take care Cx

  16. I am so glad to read that the period of worry and uncertainty seems to be behind you. A trip to the beach is always nice! I used to live across the street from the ocean, at one time. I loved listening to the waves as I fell asleep, each night.

  20. So pleased to hear that your spirits are lifting, hope returning and life is feeling better. There is nothing quite like the sea to restore the calm of ones mind. I live just a few miles from the place reputed to be furthest from the sea in the country so I don't get that lovely uplifting, calming dose of sea air often enough, and at times, how I crave it. I have three 'doses' booked for this year.

  21. I would love to live near enough to the coast to enjoy a walk like that Jules. I don't mind walking in the cold....especially with the thought of a lovely hot cuppa at the end of it.

  22. There are few things better than hearing that someone is happy so it's good to read that the tension is lifting from your shoulders. Although I live no more that 5 minutes walk from the sea and though I walk most days when I can I almost never walk along the beach in the winter unless it's an exceptionally lovely or a calm day. I prefer to walk in the woods where there is more shelter from the biting winds. Oddly I don't mind the rain in the least but the wind is not my friend.

    1. Thank you, Graham. I'm sure the brighter days are helping too. I really don't like strong winds either but sometimes a walk by the shore on a wild day is just what is required. Having said that, I enjoyed a lovely walk in the woods just this morning. X

It's surprising what subjects I can cover when I'm out and about with the dogs and even though sometimes nothing can be changed it somehow gives me a different perspective on things.   24. We love the sea air, but we've haven't ventured out much this past week. I think we need a walk on the beach pretty soon to clear our minds. Work has been busy, which has been very hard to cope with this week. I'm happy to hear things are getting better for you. Time is always the great healer. Love and best, Jane x

    Loved seeing your photographs.
    There's nothing like a walk by the sea (or water) to lift spirits and clear minds … I also love to return, make a cup of tea and sit down feeling relaxed.
