Early Autumn

As the wind begins to pick up, we are braced and ready ahead of tomorrow's incoming storm. I hope any damage will be minimal, I've already secured everything that I can in the garden.

Last weekend, coinciding with the equinox, we experienced our first proper taste of autumn. Saturday began all dewy and fresh, becoming warm and sunny by mid-morning. I decided that I would get outside while I had the chance. The challenging week at work had taken it's toll, and getting caught in the crossfire of some strained relationships had left me feeling rather discouraged. Fresh air was called for, so the weekly shop and household chores could wait until the following day.

Not too far from home we have one of my favourite National Trust properties, Sizergh Castle, where even when I don't much feel like walking very far, I can easily be persuaded to visit, as the gardens there are so beautiful.  Even better, at this time of year the orchards are full of apples and pears.

We took our time walking around the garden, following the paths in the same direction we always do, with Lily being extra careful to avoid getting too close to the beehives :) Familiarity means we get to appreciate the changing seasons there, and the Rock Garden, especially, is displaying some beautiful rich shades of autumn colour.

The Kitchen Garden is always worth a visit, and where we often catch a glimpse of Charlie the cat.

And it was there that they had all their different varieties of apples for sale. I paid for a small bag, which would provide me with more than enough cookers to make two batches of apple sauce and some crumbles, as well as five Ribston Pippins to go in the fruit bowl.

And the following day, while the expected wind and rain kept us indoors, I spent a lovely afternoon in the kitchen, filling the house with the delicious aromas of warm apples and cinnamon.

Last week, we enjoyed visits to two prospective secondary schools. Between us, we must have clocked up miles walking along corridors :)  Lily has now made her final decision and yesterday we submitted her application. It won't be until March that we find out whether or not she has secured a place, but I gather it is highly likely that she will be successful. It was quite a difficult decision in the end, but I am very happy with her choice. We are very fortunate to have some excellent schools in this area.

Following a couple of chillier nights, yesterday I made the switch to our winter weight duvets. The summer ones will now be aired, before being stored away until spring. The central heating came on very briefly the other morning, and I now am watching carefully as to when the grass will need it's last cut of the year. Autumn is here.

  1. Sizergh Castle looks beautiful, and I loved the vibrant colours in the rock garden. I always feel better for a walk, your timing was good too before bad weather arrived. Even if I don’t feel like walking once I am out and moving I feel better for the fresh air and the chance to clear my head -it restores me, puts me where I want to be if that makes sense. I was interested in the apple orchard offerings. How nice to be able to take home some apples and plan something tasty. There were some local pears on offer here, and I made a pear crisp for the first time which was tasty. We seem to be having an early fall here, with carpets of brilliantly coloured leaves. Lovely too that you have found a school you both like, to apply to for your daughter. Jean in Winnipeg

    1. A pear crisp sounds delicious. They had plenty of pears on the trees at Sizergh, but none available to buy, sadly.
I'm like a dog, Jean. I need fresh air and a good walk at least once a day. X

  2. Nice to be able to select her preferred school. I don't think that can happen here.

  3. How wonderful! Those apples look divine. What gorgeous grounds. I have been baking with homegrown apples up here in the California mountains, as well.

  5. What a shame work isn't going too well for you I hope things will improve soon. Your apples do look nice and what a bargain too, you've made me want to make an apple crumble now. Good to know Lily has made her choice of secondary school for next year, it's a huge step and she is growing up very fast xx

  6. How nice to have so many choices of good schools. Fingers crossed Lily gets her favourite one.
I can just smell those lovely, spicy, cinnamon apples. How wonderful.

Hoping the storm won't be too bad. I gather it isn't expected to affect us over in the East of England. xx

  7. Along the south coast we are due to miss most of the storm as it hugs the west coast, through Wales and heading north. It's dull here, no rain and breezy. I hope Lily gets her choice of school.

  8. Still mild and a bit muggy here. I love sizergh castle. I remember visiting there when my youngest was at uni at Lancaster. The gardens in autumn are beautiful. Hope your week is better. Toxic relationships in the workplace are very draining I recall well. B x

  9. The gardens look lovely. I have two friends who are volunteers at Sizergh. Co incidentally they are meeting me tomorrow in Wensleydale for lunch so I shall point them in the direction of your post. I am sure they will be familiar with Charles the cat.
Those wonderful old apples will taste marvellous - somuch better than modern varieties.

  10. Lovely photographs from your visit to Sizergh Castle.
Pleased that your visits to prospective secondary schools resulted in Lily making her choice. The way our weeks and months go by so quickly, March will soon be here and you will learn if her choice has been secured.
In the meantime enjoy these Autumn Days and I hope Storm Agnes treats you kindly ... our winds this evening (as I type this) have certainly increased in strength.

    All the best Jan

Love your appley pics. Hope you didn't get any damage from the storm. We are yet to have any proper autumnal weather, though there was rain in the wee hours this morning. The sunshine is all very nice, but I'm craving those cool, cosy grey days of Autumn. x

  15. I hope all was well in the storm, it's wasn't half as bad as we'd been expecting here. It's always good to get out when life is a bit of a challenge, we're so lucky to have so many lovely places we can escape to, if only for an hour or two. Fingers crossed that Lily gets her first choice of school, it's such a big decision when you consider they're spending many hours there.

I feel so fortunate that Lily is almost certain to get into her first choice of school. Then again, I don't have any concerns over her second choice, other than it would mean a slightly longer journey there each day. Xx

  17. I know I would enjoy Sizergh castle and gardens and when we next visit your part of the country, I will try to visit there. I'm sure they are lovely to visit all year round.
I can almost smell the apples and cinnamon cooking in your kitchen.
Glad Lily has found a school she feels she will be happy in for the next few years and wish her all the best.
    Have a great week.

  18. Hi Jules, such beautiful autumnal colours in the gardens, plus freshly picked apples. It is the beginning of Spring here and we have just finished picking and eating our oranges and I am starting on the lemons now. Your description of baking with apples and cinnamon is making my mouth water! I am looking forward to making lemon meringue pie with some of our lemons now :) Hugs, Rose x

  19. Sizergh Castle looks gorgeous in all her Autumnal glory. I get very excited when I spot a National Trust cat, they're like celebrities. Those apples look gorgeous. I've been eyeing up our neighbour's tree - our apples are all cookers - I might have to indulge in a bit of after dark scrumping later!
We've got a wool duvet so it adjusts to your body temperature and we can use it all year round, expensive but the best thing ever! xxx

  22. Jules - I met my friends from Grange last week (P and D) they both volunteer at Sizergh and love Charlie and love the rock garden. Next time you go look out for them and if you can speak to them. Although I expect it will soon close for winter. (they are both men of early retirement age - don't want to put their names) - I told them about your post.

  24. How was the incoming storm...did you have any weather problems, or perhaps it was just a drizzling day to enjoy. Rainy days are often my favorite kind of days - a dog-eared book I've read dozens of times, or watching an old movie, feet up, cup of steaming tea, and even a nap. It sounds like you made delicious things from the apples...a perfect day!
